Monthly consumption info: a landlord duty
Since 1 December 2021, § 6a of the German Heating Costs Ordinance (German heating regulation) has required landlords to inform their tenants monthly about their heating and hot-water consumption — provided the installed meters are remotely readable (which has been mandatory for new installations since 2022). The aim of the rule is to motivate tenants to save energy by allowing them to view their consumption promptly.
Specifically, you must provide the tenant with the following information each month: current consumption since the last statement, a comparison with last year's consumption in the same month, a comparison with the average consumption of a similar flat, and the current fuel mix of the heating system (e.g. 80 % gas, 20 % solar). Rentprime generates these information sheets automatically from the meter readings and sends them by email or as a PDF for printing.
Transitional rule: For non-remotely-readable meters the monthly information requirement does not apply. However, since 2027 no new metering device that is not remotely readable may be installed — and old devices must be replaced or retrofitted by end of 2026. So if you still have mechanical heat cost allocators without radio connection, it's time for an update.
